Gingiva
The gingiva is the soft tissue (gums) that surrounds the teeth and covers the alveolar bone, forming a protective seal around each tooth.
Healthy gingiva is firm, pale pink, and does not bleed when brushed. Inflammation is the earliest sign of gum disease — see our explainer on common causes of gum swelling.
