The procedure is typically performed by a dentist or a registered dental hygienist under local anesthesia to ensure patient comfort, especially when treating deeper periodontal pockets or sensitive areas. SRP is considered the gold standard for initial therapy in patients diagnosed with chronic periodontitis before considering more invasive surgical options.

The decision to recommend SRP is based on a thorough periodontal examination. Key indicators include:
- Periodontal Pockets: Presence of periodontal pockets measuring 4 millimeters or greater, which signify a detachment of the gum tissue from the tooth surface and often harbor bacteria.
- Bleeding on Probing (BOP): A common sign of active inflammation within the gingival tissues.
- Clinical Attachment Loss: Evidence of apical migration of the junctional epithelium, leading to loss of tooth support.
- Radiographic Bone Loss: X-ray findings indicating a reduction in alveolar bone height around the teeth.

The clinical rationale behind SRP is rooted in the understanding that plaque biofilm and calculus act as reservoirs for pathogenic bacteria and their toxins. The Procedure: Scaling and Root Planing Techniques
