Retainer
A retainer is a custom-made orthodontic appliance worn after braces or aligner treatment to hold the teeth in their new position while the surrounding bone stabilises.
Retainers may be removable (Hawley or clear thermoplastic) or fixed (a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth). Most patients need to wear a retainer indefinitely — usually only at night after the first year.
