Endodontist

A dental specialist focused on the inside of the tooth and root canal therapy.

Endodontists are dentists who have completed two or more additional years of training after dental school, focusing on diseases of the dental pulp and the tissues surrounding the roots. They typically perform 25 root canals a week, compared with about two for a general dentist, and rely heavily on magnification (microscopes), cone-beam CT imaging, and ultrasonic instruments. Patients are usually referred to an endodontist for complex root canals, retreatment of failed root canals, apicoectomies, and the management of dental trauma. Their goal is almost always to save the natural tooth.
